Long live our Green Lebanon

October just ended following the fires spreading around once again in our Lebanese forests. It has been a long period of time where Lebanon’s forests have been suffering from the climate change and poor maintenance. The negligence has led to the destruction of one of the most valuable natural resources that Lebanon has; its green nature. There is negligence for the pre & post period of the fires occurring. There should be a detection of the causes of the fire and the fire extinguishing.

Based on a case study prepared by Elissar Harati, Research Assistant at IFI and edited by Hana A. El Ghali, PhD, Senior Program Coordinator of the RAPP Program, it is noted that the Lebanese government put in place in May 2009 the National Strategy for Forest Fire Management to solve the situation of forest fires.
This was done in collaboration with the NGOs: IUCN and AFDC.

The aim of the strategy is to reduce the intensity and frequency of forest fires. These NGOs with the ministry of environment have been strongly working on this strategy, but unfortunately we are reliving the same scenario in 2012. Trees are being Murdered leading to a less clean environment full of CO2. Other NGOs are working on correcting the catastrophes through reforestations plans like Jouzour Loubnan planting more than 60 000 trees until 2012. But they have so many scars to fix.

But this is unacceptable, we deserve better, our nature deserves better and our children as well. We need to preserve the green Lebanon we all love.

Our Lebanese flag has the cedar tree in its center reflecting the importance of nature for Lebanon’s survival and particularity. Let’s preserve it and fight for its protection and growth.
